Winter Park Powder Room Remodel
This powder room remodel took place in the fall of 2019. The bathroom had been minimally updated since the home was built in 1968. We found inspiration for the space with the peacock wall covering. We new that we wanted to include a bold wall paper, but wanted to keep the colors consistent with the colors in the rest of the house. We did not want this room to feel out of place. We also wanted to give the space an updated look, but with retro touches to honor the home’s mid-century roots.
The Demolition Process
The floors of the powder room were covered in carpet, so the first step was to remove the carpet and refinish the beautiful terrazzo beneath. The second step was removal and refinishing of the yellow tile that covered the walls of the powder room. The tub itself was also a yellow-gold color, giving the powder room a dull yellow cast. We decided to re-glaze the tub and shower surround instead of removing and replacing it. The tile and grout were still in pretty good shape, which made this a viable option. The tile that covered the vanity wall had to be removed because contemporary vanities are quite a but taller than the vanities built in the 1960’s. The original solid wood door had damage and needed to be replaced.
Rebuilding the Space
Once the tile and vanity were removed from the space, we resurfaced the drywall and replaced drywall where there was previous water damage. The new vanity was built, counter tops and pluming fixtures were added. The original door was replaced with a French style door to allow some natural light into the bathroom.
The Final Touches
The day the wall paper was installed was when the powder room was really transformed. After the installation, we added the vintage bamboo mirror, the lighting, and the towel bars. Another great highlight of the powder room is the acrylic and brass hardware, which add a retro-glam punch to cabinets and closet doors.
