Coastal Loft: Style Breakdown
Last week I brought you the Coastal Farmhouse Style, this week, we’re getting in the groove with Coastal Loft.
A quick review: The major sub-types I use in my coastal style quiz are: Coastal Cottage, Coastal Farmhouse, Coastal Eclectic, Coastal Loft, Coastal Modern, and Coastal Glam. A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post on the fundamentals of Coastal Style, but in this series of style type breakdowns we will really dig into the specifics of each type.
Don’t forget to follow the Pinterest board for great ideas on how to create the style!
What is Coastal Loft?
Coastal Loft is probably best described as a California Casual meets Urban Loft look, but I didn’t want to regionally contain it too much. If you like stores like Restoration Hardware and Crate and Barrel you will be drawn to the Coastal Loft look. The color palette will mostly be neutral colors, muted blues and greens, and white. This style takes inspiration from the homes in the Pacific Northwest where you will see some industrial and craftsman touches, but with a lighter, easier feel. A great example of this style is Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) home in HBO’s Big Little Lies.
Casual, Contemporary, and modern
Coastal Loft is one of the contemporary styles. Clean, rectilinear lines are predominant. Coastal loft is also a casual style, but maintains sophisticated, grown-up vibe. One of my favorite showrooms at Las Vegas Market was the epitome of Coastal Loft. Seriously, I could have moved in and never left.
Coastal Loft Elements
Typical elements of the loft look can be seen in the board below. They include: woods in driftwood tones and shapes, low sheen and distressed metals, rectilinear lines in the furnishings, track arm accent chairs and sofas, abstract art, and natural fibers like linen, sisal, jute, and bamboo. With this style you will see coastal elements come through in the art and with texture. Coastal loft is a minimal look, so absolutely no knick knacks. You can see the elements pulled together in the board below.* You can also get some great ideas on my Coastal Loft Pinterest board.
