This week we’re talking Coastal Cottage!
Since I released my blog post on creating a coastal look last week, I have gotten some positive feedback! I have identified several sub-types of coastal style want want to introduce each one and give a little breakdown of the elements that make each one unique. The major sub-types I use in my Coastal Style Quiz are: Coastal Cottage, Coastal Farmhouse, Coastal Eclectic, Coastal Loft, Coastal Modern, and Coastal Glam. As a bonus, I’m going to give you some great ideas for achieving the look with each post.
What is Coastal Cottage?
Coastal Cottage is quintessential, iconic coastal style. Think Nantucket and Cape Cod here. This is also the style of the beloved beach house from the movie “Something’s Gotta Give.” The color scheme will mostly be navy blue, Nantucket red, grass green, white, and neutrals because this style takes inspiration from lighthouses, sailboats, and nautical themes. However, you will see aqua and spa blue, as well as coral and sage greens in this style.
Refined and Traditional
Coastal Cottage is a refined look, which means it is slightly more formal than the other coastal looks. However, it is still has a laid back feeling. Of the three refined coastal styles (Cottage, Glam, and Modern), Cottage is the most casual. This style is also more traditional than contemporary, which means you will see more curvilinear lines in the furnishings and more traditional finishes, like brass and polished chrome.
Coastal Cottage Elements
Typical elements of this look can be seen in the board below. They include: stripes, high shine metals, American Colonial inspired case goods, rolled arm accent chairs and sofas, sea birds/water birds, chinoiserie, and natural fibers. You can see the elements pulled together in the board below.* You can also get some great ideas on my Coastal Cottage Pinterest board.
