Coastal Farmhouse: Style Breakdown

Last week I brought you the Coastal Cottage Style, this week, I’m talking about Coastal Farmhouse.

A quick review: The major sub-types I use in my Coastal Style Quiz are: Coastal Cottage, Coastal Farmhouse, Coastal Eclectic, Coastal Loft, Coastal Modern, and Coastal Glam. A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post on the fundamentals of Coastal Style, this series of style type breakdowns will really dig into the specifics of each type.

Don’t forget to follow the Pinterest board for great ideas on how to create the style!

What is Coastal Farmhouse?

Coastal Farmhouse is the “shabby chic” of Coastal Style. This is a style we see a lot in the Southeastern states, particularly on Florida’s Gulf Coast and on the Atlantic Coast in Georgia and South Carolina and even in the Low Country and Bayou areas of the South. The color scheme will mostly be light aqua colors, spa blue, whites, and neutrals. This style takes inspiration from  the rural South where palmetto bushes and Live Oaks coexist in harmony. You will find nautical themes, but in a more primitive, distressed state. I often refer to this style as “Cracker Coastal” borrowing from Florida Cracker vernacular architecture.

A typical Southern style beach house inspired by “Cracker” architecture.

Casual and Traditional

Coastal Farmhouse is the most casual and relaxed look of the casual looks. There is a sense of “curated hodge-podge” in this style, which you will also find in eclectic coastal. This style is also very traditional, which means you will see more curvilinear lines in the furnishings.

Coastal Farmhouse Elements

Typical elements of the farmhouse look can be seen in the board below. They include: distressed woods, low sheen and distressed metals, simple vintage inspired case goods with a craftsman or homemade feel, rolled arm accent chairs and sofas, sea birds/water birds, and natural fibers. With this style you will see more “collections” and kitsch than in some of the other styles. You can see the elements pulled together in the board below.* You can also get some great ideas on my Coastal Farmhouse Pinterest board.
